What Is a Claude Connector, and Does Your Product Need One?

By Mohamed Lotfi SassiPublished 2 min read

Here's a question founders ask us: "My customers keep pasting our data into Claude. Should I be worried?" No. You should be glad. It means they want your product inside the tool where they now spend half their day. They're just doing it by hand.

A Claude connector removes that copy and paste. People can search, create and update things in your product without ever leaving Claude, or ChatGPT.

What a Claude connector actually is

A connector is a small server that speaks the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard that Anthropic introduced in late 2024. MCP describes how an AI assistant discovers what a product can do and calls it safely. OpenAI and others have since adopted it, so one connector works in Claude, ChatGPT and other assistants that support MCP.

In practice, a connector exposes a short list of actions, such as:

  • Search: "Find the invoices from Acme that are still unpaid."
  • Create: "Open a support ticket for this customer."
  • Update: "Move this deal to negotiation and add a note."

The user signs in once. After that, the assistant can use those actions on their behalf, only with their permissions.

Why it matters now

Every major software category went through the same shift. First you needed a website, then a mobile app, then an API. The AI assistant is the next place your customers expect to find you.

Being early matters because assistants learn which tools users rely on. The products that show up first in Claude and ChatGPT directories become the default answer for their category.

Does your product need one?

You should build a connector if:

  • Your customers repeat the same tasks in your product every week.
  • Your product holds data people want to ask questions about.
  • Your competitors are not in Claude or ChatGPT yet.

You can wait if your product is used once a year or has no data worth querying.

What a good connector includes

  • A focused set of actions. Five to eight well-designed actions beat fifty raw API calls.
  • Secure sign-in. Each user sees only their own data.
  • Testing with real prompts. The assistant should pick the right action every time.
  • Protection against prompt injection. A malicious document should never trick the assistant into exporting your data.
  • Directory-ready packaging. Descriptions, policies and screenshots for submission.

How long it takes

A standard connector takes about three weeks. Larger products with many systems or approval flows take longer.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Claude connector the same as an API?
No. An API is for developers. A connector sits on top of your API and describes it in a way an AI assistant can understand and use safely on behalf of a signed-in user.
Does a Claude connector also work in ChatGPT?
Yes. Connectors are built on MCP, which ChatGPT also supports, so one connector can serve both.
Will my connector appear in the Claude directory automatically?
No. Directory listings are reviewed by Anthropic and OpenAI. Until it is listed, users can still add your connector with a link.
